Carpet has been a standard in bedrooms, children's rooms and living rooms for many years. Warm, soft, quiet underfoot – and relatively cheap to install. Today, its share in the flooring market is clearly decreasing, being pushed out by vinyl panels, laminate and sandwich boards. This does not mean, however, that the carpet is useless - it only means that its advantages are different than previously thought and that it does not work wherever it has been used automatically for years.
Comfort and softness - the undeniable advantage of the carpet
No hard flooring material can match carpet in terms of softness and touch comfort. Walking barefoot on thick carpet is an experience that neither a vinyl plank with an IXPE backing nor a carpet on a hard floor can fully replace. For many people, this is an indisputable argument - especially in the bedroom, where the morning begins with the foot touching the floor. The carpet also absorbs falls - in a children's room or in an elderly person's room, the soft surface under the feet reduces the risk of injuries when tripping or falling.
Acoustics – here the carpet is unrivaled
Thick carpet is the best flooring material available for impact noise reduction. The ΔLw index for a 10 mm thick carpet reaches 25-28 dB - significantly higher than vinyl panels with IXPE backing, which reach 18-21 dB. The carpet also absorbs airborne noise in the room itself - the reverberation in a room with a carpet is significantly lower than in a room with a hard floor.
Allergies and hygiene - a clear advantage of vinyl
Carpets accumulate dust mites, animal hair, dander, fungal spores and other allergens in a way that no amount of vacuuming can completely eliminate. One gram of carpet dust can contain several thousand mites. In addition, dirt that cannot be removed without specialized cleaning - coffee, juice, grease stays forever or requires professional washing.
Vinyl panels have a smooth, closed surface that does not accumulate allergens and is cleaned with a damp mop. For an allergy sufferer, a pet owner or a family with small children, the difference in hygiene is so great that for many people the carpet is eliminated already at the initial selection stage.
Moisture and durability - a definite advantage of vinyl
Wet carpet quickly begins to mold - especially underneath, where the moisture does not dry for a long time. The lifespan of a carpet covering with intensive home use is usually 5-10 years - after this time it is either visibly worn or hygienically unacceptable.
VTL vinyl panels with an SPC core are fully waterproof. With a wear layer of 0.55 mm, the service life is 15-25 years, and the floor remains hygienic and aesthetic throughout this time.
When does carpet make sense?
In a bedroom for a non-allergic person, where the priority is softness underfoot and maximum sound insulation from the neighbors downstairs, a thick carpet is still one of the best solutions. In a home cinema or recording studio, where the absorption of airborne sound is crucial for the acoustic quality of the room, carpet performs a function that no hard material can replace. In a children's room for a very small child, a soft carpet provides comfort and cushioning that vinyl does not provide - although in the case of children, the issue of allergens and ease of cleaning strongly favors vinyl.
When are vinyl planks a better choice?
Vinyl planks win in any room where hygiene is important - with allergies, pets and small children making a mess. They win wherever there is moisture. They win in rooms where we want one floor to last for many years without replacement and without the costs of specialized cleaning. And they win in spaces where the aesthetics of natural wood or stone are part of the arrangement concept.
Summary
Carpet and vinyl planks are materials with completely different strengths. The carpet is soft, warm to the touch and acoustic insulation - especially in bedrooms and rooms where silence and comfort are a priority. Vinyl panels win in terms of hygiene, durability, moisture resistance and ease of care - in all other applications.
For the vast majority of modern apartments, VTL vinyl panels are a better choice than carpet - primarily because they combine acceptable comfort with infinitely better hygiene and durability. But in the bedroom of a non-allergic person who appreciates a soft floor and silence for the neighbors downstairs, the carpet still defends its place.
