Vinyl panels and parquet – an honest comparison of costs and durability

Vinyl panels and parquet – an honest comparison of costs and durability

Parquet has been synonymous with quality and prestige in flooring for decades. When someone says "I have a parquet floor", in the background you can hear something more than just a description of the material - you can hear a certain standard of finishing, care for the interior, a durable and aesthetic choice. For years, vinyl planks have been treated as a cheaper substitute for parquet - something for those who cannot afford real wood. Today this list looks completely different. Vinyl has replaced parquet in many applications, not because it is cheaper, but because in many conditions it is simply a better choice. Below is a fair comparison - without favoring any of the materials.

Purchase and installation costs

Parquet flooring is more expensive than vinyl planks when comparing similar price segments. Solid parquet made of native species - oak, beech, ash - costs from several dozen to several hundred zlotys per square meter, depending on the species, board width and finish. Multi-layer parquet, or laminated board, is cheaper than solid wood, but still usually more expensive than vinyl panels of comparable quality.

The difference becomes even more visible when you take into account installation costs. Installation of solid parquet requires a specialist team, appropriate glue or nailing, and then sanding and varnishing or oiling on site. This is a time-consuming and dirty process - the apartment is unused for several days, and the sanding dust settles everywhere. The installation team lays vinyl panels several times faster than parquet, which directly translates into lower labor costs. The total investment cost - material plus installation - clearly favors vinyl panels.

Durability and service life

This is where a more interesting discussion begins. Solid parquet has one significant advantage over vinyl that no other material can outright beat: it can be sanded and refinished many times. A well-maintained oak parquet can serve for several dozen or even over a hundred years - with subsequent sanding and varnishing cycles. This is an argument that a vinyl panel cannot face.

Vinyl planks cannot be sanded. When the wear layer wears off, the panel is replaced with a new one. With a wear layer of 0.55 mm and intensive home use, the service life reaches 15-25 years. With proper care and moderate exercise – longer.

However, the practical question is: do we really plan to use the floor for a hundred years without replacing it? In fact, floors are replaced when the apartment is renovated, the owner changes or simply when it goes out of fashion - usually every 20-30 years. In this perspective, the service life of vinyl panels is fully sufficient.

Moisture resistance

This is an area where vinyl panels win unquestionably. Parquet and moisture are a bad combination - the wood swells, deforms and molds at high humidity. Parquet flooring in the kitchen is a risk, in the bathroom - a misunderstanding. Even multi-layer parquet, which is more stable than solid, reacts to increased humidity in a way that vinyl simply does not.

Vinyl panels with an SPC core are fully waterproof. They can be used in bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and wherever parquet flooring cannot cope. This difference is of real importance when choosing one floor for the entire apartment - vinyl will easily pass through all zones, parquet will require a change of material in the bathroom and kitchen.

Compatibility with underfloor heating

Underfloor heating under parquet flooring is a topic that requires caution. Wood reacts to temperature changes - it expands and contracts. In the case of underfloor heating, these changes are cyclical and may lead to creaking, gaps between the boards and deformations. Parquet manufacturers usually allow underfloor heating, but with restrictions on the maximum surface temperature and air humidity, which, if not observed, leads to problems.

VTL vinyl panels with an SPC core are fully compatible with underfloor heating. The dimensional stability of the mineral core means that cyclic heating and cooling do not cause deformation. Heat passes freely through the core to the surface of the room, which makes vinyl one of the best flooring materials for use with in-floor heating systems.

Acoustics – who dampens better

Solid parquet without underlay transmits the sound of footsteps through the ceiling quite clearly - especially hard species, such as oak or beech, which do not absorb impact energy. With underfloor heating, the parquet is glued directly to the subfloor, without a thick acoustic underlay, which worsens the results.

VTL vinyl panels with integrated IXPE underlay effectively dampen impact sounds. The ΔLw index reaches 18-21 dB, which clearly exceeds most parquet solutions without a dedicated acoustic underlay. In multi-family housing, where relationships with downstairs neighbors are important, this is a specific, measurable advantage of vinyl. Parquet flooring laid on a thick cork underlay achieves comparable results, but the total cost of such a solution is higher than vinyl planks with an integrated underlay.

Aesthetics and appearance

Parquet has something that no vinyl panel can fully reproduce - a natural, unique wood structure that changes over the years, gaining patina and character. Each board is different, the grain is authentic, and the warmth of natural wood under your foot is difficult to imitate.

Modern vinyl panels are closer to the original than ever before - realistic prints, embossed textures, and matte finishes make it often impossible to distinguish vinyl from wood in photos. However, in direct comparison, an experienced eye will notice the difference - especially in the touch and in the subtle repeatability of the pattern, which natural wood simply does not have.

For most users, this difference has no practical significance. For lovers of natural materials - yes. It is a matter of individual priorities, not the objective superiority of one material over another.

Everyday care

Parquet flooring requires regular care: oiling or varnishing every few years, avoiding wet cleaning, special cleaning agents, protection against scratches every time the furniture is moved. Neglected parquet quickly loses its appearance and requires expensive sanding to regain its aesthetic condition.

Vinyl panels are maintenance-free in this respect. Wet mop, neutral detergent, no varnishing, no oiling, no sanding. This is a real saving of time and money in the long run - especially in households with children and animals, where the floor works intensively every day.

When to choose parquet and when to choose vinyl

Parquet flooring makes sense when the priority is natural material and the authenticity of wood, the apartment is dry and well-air-conditioned, we plan to use it for a very long time with the possibility of renovation and we are ready to invest regularly in care.

Vinyl panels are a better choice in any room exposed to moisture, with underfloor heating, when speed and simplicity of installation and maintenance are important, on a limited budget without compromising on quality, and when we want one floor for the entire apartment, including the kitchen and bathroom.

Summary

Parquet and vinyl planks are two different materials with different strengths - and an honest answer to the question "what to choose?" is: it depends on the conditions of use and priorities, not on which material is objectively better.

Parquet flooring is characterized by the authenticity of natural wood and the possibility of repeated renovation by sanding. If you want a real wood floor that gains patina and character over the years, and you are ready to invest in its regular care, parquet is a choice you will not regret.

Vinyl panels win in any room exposed to moisture, with underfloor heating, when simplicity of installation and maintenance is important, and when you want one floor for the entire apartment - including the kitchen and bathroom. Additionally, they are cheaper to purchase and install, quieter when running and do not require any maintenance for many years of use.

In the vast majority of modern apartments, where durability, resistance to everyday challenges and low maintenance costs are important, vinyl panels respond to the needs of users more effectively than parquet. Not because parquet is worse - but because vinyl fits better into the realities of everyday life.
